Finally, File Explorer tabs are available in Windows 11
And no, you can’t make them active.
A most recent version of Windows 11‘s operating system, which is now available for getting from your Settings menu, gives Microsoft’s File Explorer for that version of the software the tabs feature we’ve all been waiting for. Apart from File Explorer tabs, Windows 11 version 22H2 adds a few new features that have been absent from the original 2H22 launch. These features may or may not be to your taste, but they are simple to turn off if not. Some of them, at sure.
Since we found File Explorer tabs on a Windows Insider build in June, we have been awaiting their release. With tabs, you won’t need to juggle multiple windows in order to move a few files around—a process that inevitably results in the files getting lost and hidden behind other Windows.
Version KB5019509 has tabs turned on by default, though not everyone may prefer this. There are some features that may be familiar to Chrome users that don’t translate. For example, you cannot middle-click a file to open it in a new tab or drag a tab to another window.
Think twice if you want to disable tabs in Windows 11. Not even in the File Explorer properties menu is there a possibility to accomplish this. If you don’t like them, you may as well avoid using them.
Other functions include Suggested Actions, which reads the content on the screen and highlights it if it appears to be a date or phone number you might like to save or call. For someone simply looking at lengthy lists of dates or phone numbers, for example, I can see how this may get bothersome. And while an operating system that anticipates my every move would be handy in some situations, I’m probably going to disable this function.
The next feature, which Microsoft has aptly named “Taskbar Overflow and simple access to Task Manager,” gives users extra room on their taskbar and makes it faster to reach the Task Manager by right-clicking the taskbar. Uninitiated users can open the Task Manager by holding the Ctrl, Alt, and Del keys at the same time or by just right-clicking the Start menu, but hey, I don’t pretend to be able to advise Microsoft how to allocate their resources.
In reality, Microsoft has simply listened to users who have been missing the ability to access the Task Manager from anywhere on the taskbar and has restored it back into its newest Linux kernel.
Another innovation that improves usability is the ability to share files with more nearby discoverable devices directly from your desktop, File Explorer, Photos, Snipping Tool, Xbox, and other applications. This is known as the “improved Windows Share experience.” It resembles the Mac’s Airdrop feature slightly.
By the end of October, Windows 11 users will be able to take full advantage of the upcoming Photo App, which will combine all of their photos from OneDrive, their phones, and their cameras. It also includes a memories feature that allows you to look back at the random crap you were receiving four years ago. More definitive proof of my awful life decisions.
On a more serious note, though, Windows PC users who own an iPhone will even be able to sync their images to the cloud, which is a good option for converting to an Android device, I think.
Because of the Windows Subsystem for Android and Windows’ connection with Amazon, you may access the Amazon Appstore from your laptop.
In a recent blog post(opens in new tab), Microsoft goes into more detail on the upgrade, and another explains how the Windows Terminal is now the default for anyone desiring to utilize command line prompts to operate their PC.
Simply press the Windows key or click Start, then type “update” into the search bar to find out how to update Windows to obtain the new features. You can get the most recent version of Windows 11 from the update menu. You will not be inconvenienced by get this, but you will need to restart your computer for the adjustments to take effect.
If you have not recently checked for updates, you may have to repeat the process a few times before finding the correct build, 22621.675.
